Raise the Titanic is a 1980 adventure film directed by Jerry Jameson and produced by Lew Grade through ITC Entertainment. Based on Clive Cussler’s 1976 novel, the film was adapted for the screen by Eric Hughes and Adam Kennedy. The plot follows a daring mission to raise the sunken RMS Titanic in order to recover a rare and valuable cargo tied to Cold War power struggles.
The cast includes Jason Robards, Richard Jordan, David Selby, Anne Archer, and Alec Guinness. Despite its ambitious scope, the movie received a lukewarm response from critics and audiences alike and struggled commercially, earning only around $7 million against its reported $35 million budget. Reflecting on the film’s financial failure, producer Lew Grade famously quipped that “it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic.”
During the Cold War, deep in the remote, frozen wilderness of Northern Siberia, an American spy infiltrates an abandoned, snow-covered mine. Inside, he discovers the frozen corpse of a U.S. Army sergeant beside a wooden grave marker dated February 10, 1912. A scan with a Geiger counter reveals the presence of byzanium—a fictional, highly radioactive element with immense potential for nuclear weaponry. Before the spy can escape, he is discovered by a Soviet soldier and pursued. Just as the Soviet is about to catch him, he is shot and killed by government agent and adventurer Dirk Pitt, who rescues the injured spy and escorts him back to Washington, D.C.
Once debriefed, U.S. intelligence confirms that the mine had been operated by Americans over half a century earlier. Historical records show that the byzanium extracted there was packaged by an American named Brewster, then shipped aboard the RMS Titanic, which famously sank on April 15, 1912. Pitt seeks out John Bigalow, a former Titanic crew member who was reportedly the last person to see Brewster. Bigalow recounts locking Brewster in the ship’s cargo vault just before the vessel sank and recalls his final words: “Thank God for Southby!”
With this information, Pitt proposes an ambitious plan to locate the Titanic’s wreckage and recover the byzanium before it falls into Soviet hands. He and Admiral James Sandecker present the idea to the president, who authorizes the mission and puts Pitt in charge.
Meanwhile, Soviet diplomat Andre Prevlov learns of the secret operation and leaks it to the media, forcing Sandecker to address the press. Though he confirms the Titanic salvage mission, he avoids discussing the true objective: the byzanium, which is intended to power a next-generation missile defense system capable of neutralizing any incoming threat.
The U.S. Navy begins the massive task of locating the Titanic in the North Atlantic. During the search, tragedy strikes when the submersible Starfish suffers a flood and implodes. After finally pinpointing the wreck, the salvage team deploys equipment to begin raising the ship. Another setback occurs when the sub Deep Quest experiences a power failure, causing its robotic arm to seize up while still attached to the Titanic.
Despite these challenges, the rusting ocean liner is eventually lifted from the seabed using pressurized air tanks and flotation devices. The Titanic is towed to a dry dock in New York, its original destination over 70 years earlier. The effort is justified by the belief that the byzanium could tip the balance of power in favor of the U.S.
However, Prevlov confronts the U.S., claiming the byzanium was stolen from Soviet territory and demanding its return. When the salvage team finally opens the sealed vault onboard the Titanic, they find Brewster’s preserved remains—but the crates that were supposed to contain the byzanium are filled with ordinary gravel.
Clues point back to Brewster’s cryptic last words. It becomes clear he never intended to ship the real byzanium on the doomed voyage. Instead, he arranged a secret burial in Southby, England before setting sail. There, the byzanium was safely hidden in an unmarked grave.
Realizing that retrieving the byzanium now could ignite geopolitical instability, U.S. officials choose to leave it buried, preserving the fragile balance of peace between the East and West.
